A big Hi From Melbourne Australia

Post by Psyklops »

Wow! I'm so glad I stumbled on this forum!

I'm from Melbourne Australia and have been a New Jack Swing/Swingbeat fan since the early 90's. I grew up on the stuff and it was the music that got me into DJ'ing and really defined our mis-spent youth! The under-age club and NJS movement (which was really quite underground) around those days were simply the best and I still crank out a tune here and there to reminisce even though some friends have no idea what the track is :)

I do have a list of favourite artists and tunes that stick in my mind now because of what the moment was like whenever we heard the DJ's slam the tracks down...and yes we did do dance routines as well :)

The list below are the ones I can quickly think off the top of my head:

Bubba - I Like your style (I reckon this was the anthem!)
Damian Dame - Exclusivity/Gotta Learn My Rhythm
Boys II Men - Motownphillty/Under Pressure/Sympin
Jamaica Boys - Shake it up
Full Force - Aint my type of hype/Quickie
Troop - That's my attitude/Spread My Wings
TLC - Aint to Proud to beg/What about your friends
Guy - Dog Me out/Lets Stay Together/Spend the night/Groove Me/Do Me Right/Teddys Jam 1&2/ (Pretty Much all Guy up-tempo and Teddy remixed stuff!)
Today - Why you get funky on me/I got this feeling
Kool Skool - My Girl
Whistle - I Am (luv this track - speechless everytime it came on)
Hi Five - She's Playing Hard to get/Just Cant Handle it/Just another girlfriend/The Kissing Game/
Shai - Waiting for the day (there was a really hard to get remix of this that the DJ used to play)
Portrait - Honey Dip/Here we go again
Teddy Riley feat. Tammy Lucas - Is It Good To You
Heavy D - Is It good to you/now that we found love/we got our own thang
... heaps more!

I'm lucky enough to have those on vinyl and am really interested in any New Jack Swing mixes/remixes and mixtapes. Just recently, I've been really interested in seeing the video clips as I'd never seen half of the ones shown on youtube before.

I did a mixtape/megamix/medley years ago which I just started listening to again. What's the go with sharing mixes etc. on here?

Thanks

Hi, welcome at NJS4E!

There's a remix of Waiting For The Day by Shai on the remix compilation "Right Back At Cha", which is pretty much New Jack Swing and not that well known. You should check that out, it's a rally dope remix, especially if you're a fan of the original..

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

I do have that up-tempo remix, however there was one that had some heavy samples in it during the intro-beat and outtro's with an extended intro before the main verse.

Hey Psyklops,

That is an awesome list and definately incorporates a lot of the big hitters and more obscure stuff. If you are intersted in sharing your mixes then that is fine. There are other New Jack DJs here, with modest or even not so modest skills but, ultimately its about the mutual love for the music.

But, please note sharing music is a no go area....only because some nut cases made it hell for us a while back. Please do share your views on the music and your experiences. Please tell us if you had a high top fade, as I am sure that some of us have been there too.

Keep the love alive and its great to see another aussie on here.....it seems that Australia may at some point hone the New Jack Capital.....maybe ONE day. :D

Hi Jodecidal

Thanks for the welcome. Those were the funnest years. Back then it really grew from a huge under-age (under 18 ) R&B funk Soul New Jack scene as there was nothing really like it. The New Jack sounds was new, certainly not mainstream and help define a separate culture from the typical mainstream stuff. Pretty much all the youth caught on and when they were legally allowed to hit the regular clubs, they started searching for New Jack sounds.

Yeah, sharing music can be a challenge... I kinda thought it would be okay sharing 'mixes' as they aren't individual singles and I own the ones in my mixes.

I certainly love hearing the new jack stuff as i just can't get enough of it. Seeing some of the more obscure stuff on here is starting to make me dust off my old vinyls again.. :)

Yeah there is a mountain of information on here. Hopefully we will get to catch up with you at one of the parties and we can meet in person.

We are thinking of doing an NJS4E party in Australia next year. Lets see how that goes.

Great to have you here Psyklops! I saw you registered recently and it's great to see you posting as well. It seems you might have some information/experiences to share, so keep them posts coming and let's bring the vibe of those good ol' days back! Australia seems to be taking over at the moment  .

I love that list of tracks, there are definitely some favourites of mine in there, like the BIIM tracks, TLC, Guy, Today and Whistle. Yep, "I Am" is definitely a goodie. It's got all the qualities a stonker
OH YEAH, IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE BACK WHERE WE BELONG
I've got my old hobby back!

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

I've been waiting for a day for NJS to make a come-back. I'm quite surprised at the amount of aussies that are joining as well! :)

I'd be very interested to know any up and coming club gigs locally here in Aust. A revival, possibly a once-a-month gig at a big club locally would really set it off... I'm sure I'd bump into some old-skoolers I wouldn't have seen for years and years.

Hey Psyklops, there are allot of new jack swing things happening in Oz. There is a club called Red Room in Sydney that is an old skool and new jack swing club, it's on every Saturday and usually hits capacity by 9:15pm each week. It's one of the most popular clubs in Sydney, if not THE most popular club. So if you come to Sydney get there early.

In Melbourne, I've just linked up a monthly residency at a club called Playground @ Seven, in South Melbourne. My first performance there will be 25/8/07 and I'm told that it is a new jack swing club. You should definately check it out since you're local. And come on the 25th of August when they fly me down and say Hi!

Bobby Brown is performing in Melbourne at the Metro tonight.

Maybe I'll see you on the 25th!

Stay blessed!

DJ Mac,
You the man. I will certainly make an attempt to check out Seven.
Are they currently playing New Jack Swing tunes weekly? Or will it be a monthly gig? Either case, I'll definitely try and make the 25th of August.

I'm up in Sydney this week for work, unfortunatley I'm 1 day too late as I go up on the Sunday.

It's great to see New Jack is alive and kicking here in Australia.

Back in the day, I remember DJ's like DJC and DJ Swingbeat - this is going back a few years now... are these guys still around?

Hey Psyklops, I don't remember either of these DJs I'm afraid. The main dude for New Jack in Sydney back in the day was always DJ Nasser T. And he's still the man! He's like a walking / talking musical encyclopedia and he runs a record store in Marrickville called "Mint Condition Records" it's definately worth checking out whenever you're in Sydney. This place is the Garden of Eden!

Yeah they were like the pioneers when I first got into it. DJ Bobby Love still DJ's as far as I know, and DJ Craig G with Wayne Fernandez used to be the residents at Warehouse nightclub (which is shut down now). From memory Wayne went back to the US...

Sorry Psyklops, was this back in Melbourne that you're referring to? I've never heard of these DJs or the club you referred to before. In Sydney, the first Urban music club was opened in Kings Cross in the '70s by a man named Keith Daley whom was an ex-US Navy service man from Baltimore. Everyone else in the country was listening to Men at Work while Keith's club was playing Earth, Wind & Fire at the time. He used Robert and Eddie Khalil as DJs back then, the Khalil brothers went on to open a couple of record stores known as "Soul Sense" in Sydney and Parramatta and I think that there was another one in Bankstown or somewhere like that. The stores specialised in urban music.

Anyway, Keith also opened up clubs in Liverpool and in Campbelltown during the '80s and '90s. He brought DJ Minh into the mix when he opened Flashes in Liverpool (this was the first nightclub I ever went to, I was 10 years old at the time). But during the New Jack Swing period here in Sydney, Keith had a club in Campbelltown and then moved out of the scene, promoters like Anthony Farrah and Lenno were making waves. The main clubs were Scandals, Madness, Riva and De Ja Vu and later Da Bomb (which was my all time favorite). The main DJs in the scene then were Nasser T, George B, Lenno, Minh, Sam Boutros, KC, Georgina Reid, Kell and that's all that I can remember. Rodney O used to MC at Da Bomb. I missed most of those clubs because I didn't turn 18 until 1996 which was when NJS was on the decline and Jermaine Dupri was making hot remixes of everything and the whole Westside vs. Eastside war was underway.

I'm looking forward to catching up with you when I'm in Melbourne next month, it sounds like you have allot of local knowledge and have been in the scene for a while.
