Impromptu Performance

Post by brymstone »

This is the first place I thought of to post about it. The club I work at (barman for war vets) had their regular live spot tonight where a band or whoever come and play the oldies for them. I don't think the guy that sung tonight's voice was on form, as he started asking individual club members to sing parts of the songs he was being paid to sing.

Now, the live acts there normally play a few modern songs, and Robbie Williams' work is among those. He sang Angels, and then ambushed me at the bar and stuck the mic up my nose :P So I nervously sang some, and he carried on the rest, leaving me thinking that was it for the rest of my shift. It wasn't.

Right near the end of my shift, he announces that I "haven't gotten away with it" and that I'd be getting up on stage to sing all of Angels. Well, I was a nervous mess thinking about the "what if's" and such. I did the song and messed up the very last line.

Nearly every member in the club said I'd sung better than the hired guy. And they couldn't stop praising me enough. I'm just now calming down from the buzz as I type this. I know it's not like I've just played Wembley Stadium. But I've had a bloody great night and maybe a bonus in my wage at the end of the week ;)

Just thought I'd share a cool experience with you all. Rant over :)

When performing make the song your own and DON'T BE NERVOUS!! I'm a songwriter who writes soul ballads and I just put wants on my mind and what has happened onto paper! Many times I am shocked at what comes out! You have to draw from your life experiences and convey TRUE RAW emotion of the particular song. When you do that and then add your own personal signature, you are an artist. If you forget a line, it won't matter if you deliver intensity! And by the way, put a hurt on it!! :P
It's retro-nuevo not a New Jack ballad!!

I think you cought the essence there in just one sentence Eddie! A lot of cover bands 'just play the songs', which make them sound uninspired sometimes. They also try to make it sound too much like the original, OR make such a different version of the song that it's no good either. But as you said: make the song your own, sing it like you lived it.
OH YEAH, IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE BACK WHERE WE BELONG
I've got my old hobby back!

Thanks for sharing that. I could actually feel what you were feeling there. Maybe you should give up your day job.
NJS4E came third in our category at the VH1 Hip Hop Honours Awards. What an amazing achievement.
