Just thought I'd stop by n say hi! I love listening, singing and playing guitar to NJS, Blues, Gospel, R&B, Rock, Rap, and even Classical. Always been very musical, from listening to Motown growing up (thanks to my Mum's LP collection), to playing my first guitar around 5-6 years old. It was only a toy to me then though
I've tried to remember where I first heard NJS. I'm very sure it was before the film New Jack City, but that film's always the first thing I think of. Anyway, that's my intro thing
Thanks for that quick introduction and welcome to the ultimate place for New Jack Swing (and related stuff ) on the net! I really hope you will enjoy yourself like most of us do and you'll check back regularly. So where are you from?
OH YEAH, IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE BACK WHERE WE BELONG
I've got my old hobby back!
Who do you like on Motown and in the classic soul genres?
I actually like Quiet Storm the best but managed to obtain many rare Motown albums like the all of Chuck Jackson, Bobby Taylor solo and Taylor with the Vancouvers who had Tommy Chong as a member, Fantastic Four, David Ruffin solo including the newly released David, Eddie Kendricks solo. Got complete catalogs on all of them and then some!! So fire away at your favorites!! (Also like Philly International and Stax as well.)
Wow... Um. I'd be telling lies if I said I knew who was who in NJS or Soul circles. I have a couple of Otis Redding albums which I love listening to any time of day/night. From what I've been able to learn so far, Teddy Riley was the man behind Guy and Blackstreet. Right? Well, those are brilliant sounds to me.
I love vocal harmony in all flavours, particularly in gospel. Seems to be more energy there. And I love the free spirited nature of NJS. Like gospel, but not always about religion. It's hard for me to explain because I haven't spent as long around it as you all have. But I'm hoping this forum can point me to some great new sounds, and educate me in the process.
P.S. Sorry for the delayed reply. Lots of overtime lately. Gotta pay those bills, unfortunately.
Otis was definitely one of a kind!! His voice worked well with the Stax rhythm section and Muscle Shoals horns. After he got done singing the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" he asked he orginally performed it!! A soul man only and no cross-over!!!
I managed to finally obtain his post-humous Tell the Truth album after about 5 years of searching for under $20. It's currently only offered as an import but managed to obtain an early US pressing which went out of print in the mid 90's. I waited like a hawk as I was afraid of out of stock message from a drop shipper if I ordered the import!
If you like gospel/soul/NJS rolled into one, check out Vince Ebo's 1991 set. Other obvious gospel fav's of the NJS era were Commissioned and the Winans.
Good to have you here brymstone. We'll do anything we can to help you out in the complicated world of black music. I see eddie has already started on that

Well if you keep checking the threads on the forum, you will learn a lot. I have and all the members here have learnt a lot from the knowledge that we share here. You learned about Teddy Riley already, that's the first step and once you took that first step, there's no stopping I'm afraid! We don't expect everyone to have the knowledge, just as long as you're willing to share whatever you have to share, you're welcome to post!
If you want to know if something has been discussed before, just use the 'search' function and I'm pretty sure you will find what you're looking for. And if you still have questions, feel free to drop them .
