Waddup yall!

First off, let me just say "WOW!". I've only just discovered this site today, and I must say it's almost a dream come true to no longer need to feel like there's nobody else out there that shares my love for NJS and 80's R&B/Soul in general.

I've been listening to (and working with) NJS since it's inception. When the sound first came 'round, I was a Bay Area (California) DJ doin' house parties and other events on weekends. A couple years later I moved to Los Angeles intending to make my way by DJ'ing, then eventually make my way over to a record label. Unfortunately the competition in the DJ scene down there was a bit too fierce for me, but I managed to get myself in to one of the major labels nonetheless, and stayed there throughout most of the 90's. During much of this time, I spent all my "off-time" writing and producing songs with hopes to eventually land a publishing/production deal. Unfortunately I couldn't use my obvious "in" at the label I worked for....so happens I was actually good at what I did there, so to them, it would've been a "conflict of interest" to even LISTEN to my tapes, much less gimme a shot at producing something for them. I did manage to produce tracks for a few small names, but eventually I got tired of being told my sound wasn't enough like everyone elses (ain't that a b*tch!) and I left the music business altogether. After a few years of working in other areas of the entertainment business (particularly film and music video), I grew tired of Los Angeles altogether and moved to a small town in Pennsylvania where I still reside today.

One thing I miss dearly since leaving Los Angeles is having knowledgeable folk to discuss my passion for music with. Most people where I live now listen to country (yikes!), so without the internet, I'd have no outlet to express my love for this music anymore. I've recently opened fullasoul.com, which is one-part store, and one-part music community. The goal for both is to connect fans of soul music who can no longer find an abundant supply of new soul/R&B (thanks to US radio's demand that all records now sound alike) with the artists who are still making good soul music. There's still some great soul artists in the UK and other parts of Europe making sweet sounds that those here in the US don't know so much about....and what's more, there's some FANTASTIC independent artists out there now keepin' this music alive that hardly ANYBODY knows about. This music has played such an important role in my life, as I'm sure it has many of yours....so I plan to use my new online venture to help do what I can to keep this wonderful music alive. Please stop by and check us out if you ever feel inclined to do so :)

In the meantime, I'm gonna pull up a chair, pull some rare tunes up on my jukebox, and see what's goin' down right HERE. Y'all got a nice thing goin' here from what I can see, and I look forward to talkin' some NEW JACK music!

Welcome Fullasoul!!

I also am sitting on a reserve of tunes that I wrote and strongly believe in. I believe that there are no hits but sketches of love stories and portraits of life told in music. Clive Davis told Patrice Rushen she didn't sound like anybody else and thus he didn't know what to do with her or how to promote her. So don't be insulted.

I have mostly ballads in my songwriting stash and have never worked with anybody. I don't believe one should first go after a production deal but should try to get copyrights, musicians, demos, and sheet music together.

I can read music very slowly and can play just enough to get the idea. I need to develop more music theory and playing ability. However, during certain peroids of grief, I hear singers singing stuff they've never sung before and I write it down. I also hear the entire song. Some have string sections, keyboard interludes, and very distinct production. Some of the singers that I have songs styled around are Babyface, O'jays, Wooten Brothers, Blue Magic, Will Downing, ect.

What are you're aspirations as a writer? What specific styles do you write in?

Firstly, a big Welcome Fullasoul!!

Secondly, what a great website! Just quickly browsed through and I saw some great records that I would love to get my hands on too!

Thirdly, I hear you about the Independent labels. I regulary have a indepth look through CD Baby to see what new talent is out there. Without places like yours and Cd Baby I don't think I would even buy any new music today! :?

thank you! There's still much for me to do actually...I still have a few thousand items to add to the store (some great stuff!), and I need to find a way to build a nice base of knowledgeable music folks (like you have here!!) for the forum. The forum (which we call the Music Community) will play a very important part of the process once I finalize a few arrangements and bring some indie acts into the store. My feeling is that people like you who actually go out LOOKING for indie artists are rare....I don't think the masses go looking for indie music, they just go looking for GOOD music....and there's still this stigma to a lot of people that if an artist isn't being sold along side the big name acts that everyone's heard of, it must be because they're not as good. fullasoul.com will be STOCKED with big name artists, and the indie acts that we find and eventually support will be sold right along side those acts. The members of the forum will always be the first to know what's going down, and in return, their conversation and enthusiasm for the indie acts that we offer them will only help the artists that much more. It's a way for everyone involved to both give AND get....once people actually get over there and join the forum, lol.

Thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome.....I'm diggin' this place already!

:)

Hey Fullasoul,

Just putting a shout on your welcome page. Glad to be aprt of the community myself. As for as giving up on your goals as a musician tsk tsk, I always say to do what's in your heart no matter if someone is listening or not. Music is a part of everyone, but for those who create it it is like a baby, your own personal thing no one can take away. Now i have something to share, in 2003/04 i considered giving up the profession, not because i wanted to, but due to the craziness that was going on stateside with the label mergers and not reaching where I felt I should have been success wise with my accomplishments. connects i had just was gone and work was hard to find, but God allowed me to take a hiatus then brought me back full circle to it. so please don't give up. Maybe we can post some things to one another.. hit me up

Peace

It's interesting that you say this, Ike....I've actually been toying with the idea of puttin' my rig back together and recording this summer. I'm not lookin' forward to the "rust" I'm sure to have by now, but there's just no sense in me runnin' from it anymore. I actually had more "success" in the film business (where I went when I got out of the music business), but it never did for me what a productive day in the studio used to do for me....eventually I gotta stop dodgin' my past and let that part of me be fulfilled again. I'm glad to hear you worked through your own "dark period" as well :)

If I get myself in gear here, I'd most definately like to post some stuff back/forth....cool.
