Hey New Jacks ! My Introduction.

Post by ruffmix1996 »

Add anutha Melbourne Brotha to the pile !

The Year Was 1988 - I was 15 years old, and my first two nightclub experiences were Silvers on a Sunday with DJ Ray Shirley and Billboards on a Saturday where Jabulani was doing covers of Funky Dance Tracks.

I remember waiting in the Trak Centre around 9pm waiting for the Silvers Doors to open - this was back in the days b4 extended hours liquor licensing and therefore people rocked up *that* early ! Crazy !

Got in Silvers and was surrounding by a heap of Slick looking suit wearing Bruthas and Fly Elegant Sisters who loved the sounds that DJ Ray was spinning as he held the Telephone style DJ monitoring headphones to his skull ...a mix of 80s Electro Funk and an Emerging New Street Style.

From "Joy" - Teddy Pendergrass to Bobby Brown - "Don't Be Cruel", and no Ray didn't forget about the slow jams either with "Shake You Down" -Gregory Abbott making the ladies swoon.

It was a magic night and if I wasn't in love with R&B, Soul and Funk already, I was now !

From that time, my passion for Black Music has continued, expanding and diversifying. Props out to DJC for his PBS show back in the Day - always keeping it fresh, always educating.

Also peace out to Roger Joel whose head would seem to pop up everywhere from Mighty Music to Billboards, and keep me up on the latest hey! out there.

The Long Sleeve Sliky Shirts and the Channels in the Hair maybe long gone guys but lets see if we can bring back that feeling!

When we were all united on by one TR Jam after another !

Welcome Ruffmix!

Sounds like you have some good memories there! I was only 13 in 1988 so wasnt out clubbin' it yet (not that I didnt want to though).
But, three years later in 1991/92 I remember clubbin' in 'Granaries' night club and 'king on the Rye' in Peckham south london. Myself and my friends jammin to Wreckx n Effect, Jodeci, Bel.Biv.Devoe, Bubba, Tlc, Johnny Kemp, Today ect. Good memories those!! :D

Enjoy the forum!

Hey guys, thanks for the welcome !!

Still spins me out to hear how peeps worldwide can be so on the same wavelength !!!

Hope you guys are representing in both London and Manchester !

Mello, just hearing you mention some of those great artists makes me smile both inside and out. 8)

When I think about Today and trax like "I got the feeling", and "Let Me Know" and "Girl I got My eyes on You" and "Him or Me"...oooh baby what great songs.

Then I remember when I was in Uni, the first time, someone played me Jodeci, and I wasn't even sure how to prounounce their name. I thought nobody could be as hard as Teddy and Guy. But then when I heard "My Phone", "It's Alright", "Play Thang", oh man, it was like R&B on Steroids !

And then there were others - Troop, Rude Boys, Intro, Silk, Chuckii Booker - sure some of these came after the peak of the New Jack era but they definitely had their roots in the New Jack sound. And it was all fantastic stuff. :!:

Ruffmix, glad youre smiling inside and out!!! 8)

Troop, Silk, Rude Boyz, Intro now youre really talking!! Was not so keen on Chuckii Booker though. I think its because that tune 'Games' was played so much!! Radio, Clubs and TV it was everywhere!!! You know that 'played to death' feeling?

If I remember rightly the artists albums that I played the most (almost on a almost daily basis!) around the 91/92 period were:
Al B Sure - 'Sexy Versus',
Ready for the world' - Straight down to Business',
Troop - 'Deepa',
Silk - 'Lose Control,
Jodeci - 'Forever My Lady',
Christopher Williams - 'Changes'.

Although they are not new strictly jack, like you, they made me smile inside and out!! 8)

Oh, just incase you didnt realise I am a Gyrl not a Guy!!

Ruffmix1996, I completely agree with you there. It's an amazing feeling to think that if/when I visit Europe, I'll be able to see if I can meet up with StevieSwing, say hi to Mello75, head over to Amsterdam and attend one of Miss Soulful's "Reminisce" parties...and to think that Australia also has quite the NJ vibe going on in some areas. And there's so many more places being represented here. It's great.

So, cheers to the worldwide love!

Yo Mello !

It's funny you said you heard Games played so much ? Was that the album cut or the remix ? It was *extremely* rare to hear it here in Melbourne. I guess being in London though, that makes sense. In Melbourne back then (91/92) you used to have to stay up till midnight and tune into some community radio station to hear *ANY* real R&B.
DJC (anutha member on this site) used to do a fantastic show on a local community station PBS. (Peace Out CNut !)

I was always hanging to hear the remix of Games (DJC was the only dude that I heard play it) - I thought it was smooth (and still do) - so smooth that I spent years trying to track it down on vinyl !

Yeah I do know the feeling when a song is played to death, however u know u shouldn't be so hard on the dude Chuckii - both his albums, especially Nice and Wild had some killer cuts, and he also did that track "Treat U rite " by Angela Winbush which was also on the smoothe tip. He's actually playing in Lionel Richie's band these days ...trip !

But yeah, u were listening to some great artists back then - I personally dug Al B Sure's Private Times CD. Jodeci - Forever My Lady - can't go wrong there - an all time classic. Of course the whole NE posse were exploding - I loved Bobby Brown (I even had my hair like him at one stage  ) and BBD is something I can still kick now to put me in full street mode. And can't forget Johnny and Ralph !

Bottom line for me though - not to beat a dead horse but Teddy Riley was the hey!. Back in those days (unlike the present), the brotha could not do a thing wrong and I would realistically estimate that any Melbourne R&B club I went to would be playing 50% TR tracks. He just kept pumpin them out !!!!

But Mello, as for you being female, heheh yes yes you had me fooled with your Al B Sure avatar. I guess you can never assume anything in cyberspace :D

So, I'll probably cop a virtual slap 4 this, but any chance of seeing your pic :P ??? I'll show you mine if u show me yours hahah

Peace
