New poster here- Hello!!!

Post by Tim Partridge »

Hi,

I couldn't believe my luck when I found a WHOLE WEBSITE devoted to Newjack Swing!!! I am really REALLY getting into old school and prime from the Minneanapolis funk roots of Prince, Time Jam/Lewis, Cymone, Oliver Lieber, KC Cohen,Pebbles, Janet and Jody Watley and then 1989-1992, the glory years with everyone from Riley and Wrex and Tex, Tony Toni Tone, TROOP, BasicBlack, Salt N Pepa, Ralph Trevsant, Al B Sure- Gosh, I long for those days!!!

I really miss FUNKY RnB with that dance floor tinge- The Neptunes quote it alot on their stuff, but it just isn't comparable in anyway- it all disappeared after 92 as we know and became something else that I don't really advocate- Jason Nevins is another guy who you can tell LIVES for the Newjack sound- Rockstar the remix was about as Newjack as you could get!

I especially love the Shep Pettibone remixes of early NewJack stuff, such as Shep's remix makeover of Laface's stuff- I never liked Babyface outside of Deelite and his use of synths with LA was always a little thing tring to simulate real instruments- Shep's remix of Knocked Out for Paula Abdul for instance (doing her best impression of Pebbles) is an amazing full body makeover that just took the thin laface production and umped up everything to make it SERIOUSLY dancable funk with loads of Mastermix style overdubs. Sheps remix of Benefit of The Doubt for Pebbles is another one just like this, bringing back into the mix the Nile Rodgers/prince-ified funk guitar that it all derived from. Keep It Together for Madonna is another great NewJack remix.

I als love NewJack in filmscores- Marcus Millers HOUSE PARTY, Harold Faltermeyers KUFFS and QDIIIs menace 2 society. Anyone have comments on those excellent scores?

My goodness- I LOVE this website- it just makes the genre PROUD and makes us remember a time before contemporary black pop music became a looped sample, racial inequality slurs, booty obsessed sexism, casio drumulator backing and a Hype Williams video...

Anyway- GREAT to be here!!!! THANKYOU for this site!!!

Tim, u r the man !

Hey look I loved LA & Babyface - I thought they were way better than (what I heard) from Shep Pettibone.

But hey, it's great you have *YOUR OWN * opinion and have the Knowledge to back it up !!!!!!!!!!!! (This is rare these days or maybe I'm just getting old  ).

Individual Opinions about the black music we are all obviously SO passionate about, is what makes these forums ! So u go man, give us the 411 !

And by the way, the Minneapolis stuff is awesome isn't it. I don't know if you've read the book on Prince called "Slave to the Rhythm" (I think it's by Liz Jones??). Anyway, it talks a lot about all that stuff...the scene in Minneapolis when Prince was coming up. Very interesting stuff.

Peace and Welcome !
