TLC
(l to r: Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Rozonda "Chilli" Williams, Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes)
Once dubbed the female BBD, TLC emerged at the end of the New Jack Era and have become legends. Their first album introduced the rowdier sound of the newly formed LaFace records (thanks to Dallas Austin) and was an immediate success. The chaotic funk of Aint Too Proud To Beg ruled the spring of 1992, while the laid-back Baby, Baby, Baby defined the summer of 1992. Two more singles would emerge from the album, and by the holiday season, they had even released a single entitled Sleigh Ride.
Lisa Left-Eye Lopes made headlines when she burned down the home of her then boyfriend Andre Rison, a football star with the Atlanta Falcons, in 1993.
In 1994, TLC returned with their biggest album to date, CrazySexyCool. Creep, Red Light Special, Waterfalls, and Diggin On You were all substantial hits, in addition to Kick Your Game. After winning numerous awards, the group declared bankruptcy to get out of their contract with Perri "Pebbles" Reid.
Editor's Note: It seems declaring bankruptcy may be the only way for performers to get out of "bad contracts" they may have signed when they were first starting out. LaFace artist Toni Braxton would follow this very same strategy nearly 2 years later
In 1999, the group returned again with Fanmail, with three hit singles: Silly Ho, No Scrubs and Unpretty. Rumors abounded that the group was breaking up, in large part to Left Eyes conspicuous behavior in regards to the group. In 2002, TLC is planning to return.
Also, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes is signed as a solo artist named "N.I.N.A" (New Identity Not Applicable) to Suge Knight's Tha Row Records (formerly known as Death Row Records), Rozonda "Chilli" Williams has appeared in Usher's "U Remind Me" and "U Got It Bad" videos as his girl, and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins is married to rapper Mack-10.
UPDATE (4/26/02)
Lisa Lopes has been killed in a car crash while vacationing in Honduras on April 25th, 2002. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes will be truly missed. What this means for the forthcoming TLC and N.I.N.A projects remains uncertain for now.
"We had all grown up together and were as close as a family. Today we have truly lost our sister," Lopes' TLC partners Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas said in a statement released to CNN.
Tara Kemp
In late 1990 and early 1991, Tara Kemp made noise around the world with an incredibly seductive song called Hold You Tight. Originally aired on San Franciscos 106.1 KMEL, the song quickly caught on and soon she was an overnight success. As a White woman, Tara seemed to make an effort to fit in with the R&B audience by using Black men in her videos, and appearing on Soul Train. Her second single Piece of My Heart was a decent follow-up to Hold Me Tight, but sonically they were closely related.
By the time 1991 was over, so was Tara's commercial success.
Taylor Dayne
Blessed with a powerful voice, Taylor Dayne was a pop music fixture during the New Jack Swing era, whose biggest hit was 1990's "Love Will Lead You Back" which reached #1 in April of that year. But it all started in 1988 with her debut album, 'Tell It To My Heart' featuring a a top ten single of the same name, and "Don't Rush Me" which reached #2 in 1989. From Taylor's second album (Can't Fight Fate), notable singles included "I'll Be Your Shelter" and "With Every Beat Of My Heart" in addition to "Love Will Lead You Back".
By the end of the New Jack Swing Era, Taylor Dayne's career slowed down considerably. But she returned in 1998 with the album 'Naked Without You' to the delight of her die-hard fans.
