The Party

(pictured top to bottom: Chase Hampton, Dee Dee Mango, Albert Fields, Damon Pampolina, and Tiffini Hale)

The members of this "co-ed", multi-racial quintet were the first alumni of the Mickey Mouse Club to strike it big outside the confines of Disney World studios between 1989 and 1991. Featuring members Albert Fields, Dee Dee Mango, Damon Pampolina, Chase Hampton and Tiffini Hale, The Party (along with the Guys Next Door) were trying (emphasis on the word “trying”) to give the New Kids On The Block a run for their money. The group’s most notable song was probably a remake of Dokken’s “In My Dreams” in the summer/fall of 1991. Although most of the members have remained quiet, Dee Dee Mango has enjoyed years of success playing the lead role of Miss Saigon on Broadway.

Update: Albert Fields released an album in 1995 entitled 'Back To Reality' under the name, "Jeune" and plans to another album soon. Chasen Hampton has his own alternative soul band called, "Buzzfly". Damon Pampolina is pursuing acting now and made an appearence on MTV Undressed in 2000,where he played a gay personal trainer. Tiffini Hale's whereabouts are unknown at this time.

Paula Abdul

A former Laker Girl, and a choreographer for Janet Jackson in the mid 80s, Paula made her debut with 1989’s “Forever Your Girl” album. Her first two singles flopped “The Way That You Love Me”, and “Knocked Out”, but Virgin believed in her, and released one more single, the sassy and confident “Straight Up”. Featuring a cameo by a rapidly rising Arsenio Hall, “Straight Up” was a huge hit, and Paula Abdul was an instant celebrity after that single.

Followed up with “Forever Your Girl”, “Cold Hearted”, “The Way That You Love Me”, “Opposites Attract”, and finally “Knocked Out”, Paula rode success during the New Jack Era, riding high in both the pop and R&B world, giving her former boss Janet Jackson a run for her money.

In the summer/fall of 1991, Paula released “Spellbound”, her last great album. “Rush Rush”, “Promise Of A New Day”, “Blowing Kisses In The Wind”, “Vibeology” and finally “Will You Marry Me?” were the singles released during that campaign. Paula even went on tour with Color Me Badd, and interracial group that was definitely a product of the New Jack Era.

In 1995, Paula released her final CD, which did not fare well commercially. In 2000, she released a Greatest Hits compilation. This past summer, Paula was a judge of Fox-TV's "American Idol" show, a sequel to Britain's "Pop Idol". No word on whether she will be featured on the upcoming "American Idol II".

Pebbles

Pebbles was probably the closest thing to Karyn White’s “rival”. Also on LaFace, Pebbles was Antonio “L.A.” Reid’s wife. Her first album featured the hits “Mercedes Boy” and “Girlfriend” in 1988. Her second album featured her biggest hit, “Giving You The Benefit” in 1990, and also the title track, “Always” and the classic “Love Makes Things Happen”. Artistically speaking, Pebbles second album is an excellent place to hear the team of L.A. & Babyface, along with Kayo and Daryl Simmons making musical magic. Cameos in the album feature fellow new-jack’ers Johnny Gill and Salt’N’Pepa.

In 1991, Pebbles managed TLC, but they were wrestled away from her once she became estranged from the LaFace camp (probably because of her divorce with L.A. Reid). In 1994, she introduced the world to another group, and released an album – both were commercial disappointments.

By 1996, Pebbles had become a born-again Christian, and is now an evangelist.
